Step back into a sun-drenched 1950s summer with this stunning work of black and white photography. Captured by the legendary Whites Aviation, this aerial photography masterpiece offers a panoramic 1959 vista that spans the rugged southern coastline all the way to the distant eastern hills. From the elevated perspective of the Orchy Cres Lookout, your eye is immediately drawn to the silhouette of Taputeranga Island sitting within the pristine waters of the Taputeranga Marine Reserve. Below, the iconic Island Bay Beach and the winding Marine Parade serve as a nostalgic reminder of the classic 50s era of seaside swimming and beach culture. The journey across this historic print continues over the residential heart of the South Coast, passing the lush greenery of Southgate Reserve, Recreation Reserve, and Oku Street Reserve. As the hills roll downward, the view reveals the interconnected suburbs of Houghton Bay, Kilbirnie, and the slopes of Mt Albert. In the mid-ground, the distinct layout of Wellington Airport acts as a gateway to the Miramar peninsula and the expansive surf of Lyall Bay. This vintage perspective provides a rare look at the harbour and the development of the capital during a transformative decade in New Zealand photography. On the horizon, the frame settles on the hazy, tranquil outlines of Eastbourne across the ocean, completing a sweep that encompasses the very best of Wellington geography. This piece is more than just a photograph; it is a masterclass in retro prints aesthetic, capturing the raw beauty of the Pacific meeting the capital’s edge. Whether you are a collector of vintage prints or a local with a deep connection to the city, this image serves as a perfect window into a classic Kiwi summer from over half a century ago.
