This evocative 1967 black and white photography print captures a quintessential summer day at Freyberg Beach along the iconic Oriental Parade. Looking down the promenade in Pōneke, Wellington, the scene is a vibrant snapshot of the 60s, filled with families, kids, and sun bathers scattered across the sand. From the striped beach umbrellas and beach towels to the classic trunks worn by those swimming in the ocean, this historical photograph perfectly preserves the relaxed vintage energy of a mid-century New Zealand harbour front. The composition highlights the striking contrast between the natural beauty of Wellington Harbour and the growing urban landscape of Oriental Bay. The eye is drawn from the water and the play of the fountain toward the Oriental Bay Band Rotunda and the historic Te Aro Baths. In the background, the distinctive Norfolk pines line the Great Harbour Way, while the hills are dotted with a mix of traditional villas and the emerging hi-rise apartment blocks that began to redefine the hill top houses of the era. Rows of 60s cars parked along the sea wall further ground this piece in its 1960s setting, making it a standout example of new zealand photography. As a piece of interior art, this print offers a sophisticated retro charm that brings the history of Wellington to life. Part of our curated collection of historic prints, it is a versatile choice for those who appreciate black and white photography and vintage prints. This work makes a meaningful and nostalgic gift, serving as the perfect gifts for mum, dad, grandad, or grandma to celebrate their connection to the capital. Whether displayed in a modern home or a classic villa, this aerial photography style view remains a timeless tribute to the sun, sea, and style of Oriental Bay.
